Comic Means Translation in Feature Films

The chapter considers the division of comic means in film discourse into transformations and intensifiers of the comic. The use of transformation of the comic creates the deviation from linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic norm or simultaneous actualization of norm and antinorm (antiphrasis as a kind of irony), or two norms (puns or double entendre) that reveal contrast, results in conflict between implicit and explicit plan of the joke, story or other form of comic discourse, turning the serious norm into profanation or carnival and unexpected funny closing. Linguistic intensifiers of the comic imply the secondary means of creating comic effect that often, however, not always act as emotional triggers and enhance the comic perception of the joke. The study also considers three levels where the comic is verbalized: lexical, stylistic and discursive in the comedies Big Momma’s House and Dr. Dolittle as well as the problem of translatability of comic means in general and in the mentioned films in particular. It emphasizes the principles to which Ukrainian translators resort to achieve the adequacy of translation.
Communication Library Mechanisms for Children՚s Social Integration

The article deals with communicative mechanisms of social interaction between libraries and different population categories. In conditions of information society, crisis situations, and war conflicts libraries should not only be supported by society but also to reintegrate into social life. Legislative instruments that regulate the work of libraries for children and determine its place in society were analyzed. The information about sociocultural, educational and informational functions of libraries much broader on the current conditions than set by legislation have been considered. The study finds that libraries for children work with different categories of young people including relocates, children with limited health capacities, teach finance and computer basics, develop creative talents and provide psychological help for parents. The paper presents an idea that libraries are not only limited to leisure activity institutions but have an important role in the process of socialization. The article deals with mechanism of library interaction with young people, particularly social partnership. Based on the research of sites and blogs of regional children's libraries, the National Library of Ukraine for children, the main mechanisms of communication for social integration of young people into public and social life were determined.

The thesis sets out to make essence of the notion of “rhetorical questions”, as the problem of investigation of the communicative loading of rhetorical questions in the artistic speech remains still open. This deals not only with different views of linguists on the given question, but also of great quantity of factors, which influence its decision. Due to the fact that rhetorical questions may display different functions in English than those found in Ukrainian, some problems of misunderstanding are expected to appear. It is hypothesized that many intricate functions are realized in Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, William Thackeray and Oscar Wilde which require great attention. The study has found out that rhetorical questions is somehow difficult to understand because it necessitates the speaker to have good knowledge of all their functions in English in general, and in the mentioned above texts in particular. Rhetorical questions are not really questions, but statements given in question format. The question format thus allows others to disagree, but is not necessarily seeking agreement. In literature, rhetorical questions can be a very powerful persuasive or thought-provoking tool. They can be humorous, obvious, or reflective. In our thesis we have separated them into “self-evident rhetorical question” and “not self-evident rhetorical question”. Most recently we have turned our attention to the “self-evident rhetorical question” in which questions have the implicit meaning as the result cause some difficulties of their understanding. In summary, the rhetorical question reinforces the meaning of the interrogatives and declaratives and conveys a stronger shade of emotive meaning.
Conceptual analysis of the psychological portrait of Billy Milligan’s multiple personality evolution

The article sets out to provide the results of the conceptual investigation of the notion of the multiple personality portrait and the process of the conceptual sphere formation on its subconscious, mental and psychological levels being based on the investigation of the linguistic means of expressing the characteristics of the protagonist and his alter-egos by means of the English language. The relevance of the work is caused by the considerable attention currently paid to the ways of human cognitive activity verbal representation in English-language fine literature along with peculiarities of its translation into modern the Ukrainian language, because this aspect is still questionable and remains to be one of the most difficult tasks in the translator`s work from English to Ukrainian in particular. Linguistic and conceptual features of the multiple personality representation in the fine literature were thoroughly examined in the novel “The Minds of Billy Milligan” by Daniel Keyes whose works were awarded with two of the most prestigious prizes in the spheres of English scientific prose. The research showed that psychological portrait of Billy Milligan`s (the protagonist of the novel) multiple personality can be studied only as a complex image because it involved 23 completely different alter-ego with split conceptual sphere in each of it. Every new personality had their own name, look, age, character, manner of speech, behavior, IQ level and also particular role to play in Milligan`s body. Depending on their function, stage of development and core personality`s self-improvement level, every new concept was represented in the English language with the help of different linguistic and stylistic means. While making investigations it was determined that the process of verbal representation and further translation of the multiple personality`s conceptual sphere is extremely difficult, because it requires not only constant and in-depth study of linguistic units, but also thorough analysis on the psychological and subconscious levels.

The article argues that a Context Approach which places context at the heart of the training should be viewed as the central paradigm in the language education of aviation operators. Diplomatic Language as a Reflection of a Political Stance Regarding the Conflict in Eastern Ukraine

The paper features the results of a content analysis of the speeches delivered at the 8726th meeting of UN Security Council on the situation in eastern Ukraine held on 18 February 2020, with the specific goal to explore the correlation between certain speech markers and the political stand of the speaker, in this particular case – each member country’s stance on the agenda and the extent they choose to show their position between the two parties of the conflict, Russia and Ukraine. As a genre of diplomatic discourse, speeches delivered at the UN Security Council meetings are expected to be carefully balanced in terms of the language and restrained in terms of emotions. Thus, any cases of deliberate emotionality, explicit evaluation of other participants’ actions and deviation from diplomatic impartiality and ambiguity are meant to signal the speaker’s distinctive position on the agenda. The analysis resulted in singling out language markers that break with the traditional matter-of-fact tone of diplomats’ speeches on such occasions, the major of them being the use of emotive vocabulary, emphatic syntax, metaphors, hyperboles, idioms, evaluative language, labelling, accusatory rhetoric, modal verbs denoting obligation and determination. The hypothesis that the more frequent is the use of these markers in a speech, the more clearly the speaker wants to show the position of his/her country regarding the parties of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, has been fully confirmed. In our analysis, we also looked at two auxiliary markers, the number of mentions of proper names identifying the parties to the conflict and the length of speeches. The first of them showed that the participants’ desire to “annoy” Russia is directly proportional to the number of Russia’s mentions in their speeches. The length of speeches also in most cases turned out to be indicative of the speaker’s intention to clearly show their position between the conflicting parties. Characteristically, China’s representative’s speech appeared to be not only devoid of any counter-matter-of-fact markers, i.e. the most generally and neutrally phrased, but also the briefest.

The paper explores the use of feminine nouns in the present-day English and Ukrainian to consider the following questions: what tendencies are under way in the both languages; how much GFL innovations are normalized (fixed in dictionaries); what is the public perception of these changes. The author also tries to make some observations concerning the correlation between GFL-related innovations in the language and the real status of women in Ukraine’s society.
Formation and translation of military terminology

This research presents a solution to the current scientific problem of rendering Ukrainian military terms, abbreviations based on official Internet resources, which cover current and official information about events in Ukraine. The material was sampled in the period from February 24, 2022 to March 31, 2022, which secured the selection and analysis of about 380 samples of military terminology. This paper presents an overview of the historical stages of the formation of military terminology. It figures out that the military terminology is characterized by a significant number of shortenings, such as: initial abbreviations, syllabic abbreviations, acronyms, sound-letter abbreviations. Military terminology is also characterized by a significant number of abbreviations. Analysis of Ukrainianlanguage information channels and their English-language versions shows that primarily translators resort to consecutive translation, where choosing between transcoding and loan translation, preference is given to loan translation, because transcoding often creates units that do not make sense in the language of translation, a kind of pseudo-word. This primarily concerns the change of case forms, the number of words in a phrase, affixes, word order, morphological or syntactic status of the word. It should be borne in mind that the translated term must conform to the language of the translation. In some cases, when it comes to unidentified munition, alphanumeric identifiers are used, which must be also taken into account by the translator. The analysis of the translation of military terms revealed that for rendering military terms the following methods were mostly used: full borrowing of the English abbreviation, which constitutes, full translation and creation on its basis of the Ukrainian abbreviation. The least used methods were full translation, sound-letter transcription, transliteration, transcription, translation and transcription.

The article deals with the peculiarities of the use of linguistic and stylistic means in the English-language political speeches of Petro Poroshenko. Particular attention is paid to creating emotional impact on the audience with the help of language means used by the speaker in the speeches, which contribute to rendering a pragmatic message of the speaker. The analysis of the language means translation is conducted and the peculiarities of rendering the pragmatic potential of the speeches in the Ukrainian translation are considered.
